When acid juices of the stomach splash upward into the esophagus, the result is commonly called heartburn or "acid reflux". Normally, a ring of muscles called the esophageal sphincter prevents stomach acid from entering the esophagus, but if the muscles relax or open under pressure from acidic juices from the stomach, acid reflux may result. Persistent heartburn that occurs two or more times per week is called gastroesophageal disease (GERD), or more commonly, Acid Reflux Disease. Chronic GERD has the potential to scar and damage the lining of the esophagus.
Common heartburn has many causes. It may be caused by wearing clothes that fit too tightly, or lying down too soon after eating. Alcohol, nicotine and caffeine can relax the esophageal sphincter and allow stomach acid to enter the esophagus. Poor digestion is the most common major contributor to GERD. People with GERD appear to have a predisposed weakness in their gastrointestinal tract.
According to Jordan Rubin in his book, Patient Heal Thyself, people with Acid Reflux disease (GERD) should avoid deep fried foods, hydrogenated oils, margarines, shortening or lards. They should cut back on dairy products, alcohol, sodas, artificial sweetners and white flour and sugars, especially late at night. He also suggests that they take Primal Defense in higher dosages, Omegazyme with each meal, Acid Defense before bed, and RM-10 to help heal existing damage.
